Referencing mistakes cost marks and can look like plagiarism. A tutor shows you how APA 7th edition (or the style your department uses) works, so you can cite sources correctly in the text and build your reference list.

View ProfileAPA 7 referencing: the essentials
APA style has two parts that must match: citations in your text and the reference list at the end.
- 1In-text citationsGive the author's surname and the year, for example (Okafor, 2021) or Okafor (2021). Add a page number for direct quotes.
- 2Two or more authorsTwo authors: (Okafor & Bello, 2021). Three or more: the first author and "et al.", for example (Okafor et al., 2021), from the first citation.
- 3Journal articles in the reference listAuthor, A. A. (Year). Title of the article. Journal Name, volume(issue), pages. Add the DOI as a link when there is one.
- 4BooksAuthor, A. A. (Year). Title of the book in italics. Publisher. The publisher's location is no longer needed in APA 7.
- 5Order and formatList references alphabetically by the first author's surname, with a hanging indent and double spacing.
- 6Every citation must have a referenceCheck that every source cited in your text appears in the list, and the other way round.

Questions people ask
What's the difference between APA 6 and APA 7?
APA 7 simplified several rules: for example, the publisher's location is no longer needed and in-text citations with three or more authors use "et al." from the first citation. A tutor can check your list against the current edition.
